Horibe Yahei Kanemaru and Chushingura Utagawa Kuniyoshi, a renowned ukiyo-e artist of the Edo period, portrayed Horibe Yahei Kanemaru, one of the Forty-seven Ronin of Ako.
The Ako Ronin were the central figures in the famous Ako Incident, widely known as Chushingura (The Treasury of Loyal Retainers). Horibe Yahei Kanemaru was the oldest of the forty-seven at the age of seventy-seven and took part in the historic raid to avenge his lord. The Ako Ronin remain enduring symbols of loyalty and bravery in Japanese culture, and Horibe Yahei Kanemaru is remembered as one of their most respected members.
Chūshingura — The Tale of the 47 Ronin. After their lord, Asano Naganori, was forced to commit seppuku following a conflict at the shogun’s court, his samurai were left masterless—ronin, stripped of status and purpose.
Led by Ōishi Kuranosuke, forty-seven of them chose a different path: not resignation, but loyalty beyond death. For nearly two years, they concealed their intentions, living in quiet patience to avoid suspicion.
On a winter night, they carried out their mission—storming the residence of Kira Yoshinaka, the man they held responsible, and avenging their lord with precision and resolve.
After fulfilling their duty, they surrendered, accepting their fate. Honored for their loyalty, they were granted the right to die as samurai.
A timeless story of loyalty, sacrifice, and honor—where justice is measured not by law alone, but by unwavering devotion.
