Pelikan Maki-e Goldfish – Limited edition

Maki-e is the timeless and intricate Japanese art of lacquer painting, admired for its elegance and masterful craftsmanship. In this technique, detailed patterns are hand-painted onto lacquer surfaces before being dusted with fine gold, silver or platinum powders to give the work its unmistakable brilliance.
The Pelikan “Goldfish” fountain pen features two refined Maki-e techniques: Togidashi-Taka-Maki-e combines the raised textures of Taka-Maki-e with the smooth, glossy finish of Togidashi-Maki-e. This dual technique enhances the depth and sophistication of the Japanese art of lacquer.

The Symbolism of the Goldfish
Originating in China, the goldfish traces its lineage to a red carp discovered in the Yangtze River during the 3rd or 4th century. Over time, these ornamental fish were bred in royal courts and temples, evolving into the elegant and lively goldfish we know today, characterized by their flowing forked tails and vibrant colors.
In Japanese culture, goldfish (金魚) are revered as symbols of prosperity, good fortune, and elegance. Their name is thought to derive from “Chin-yui,” meaning “wealth fish,” and they have appeared in Maki-e artwork for centuries as emblems of vitality and
abundance.

Pelikan’s Masterpiece
The Pelikan “Goldfish” Maki-e Fountain Pen features an elegant and symbolic scene: a lively goldfish is depicted on the cap, while a white goldfish with delicate details adorns the barrel. Each fish is intricately painted, with their scales and flowing tails highlighted by delicate touches of gold that accentuate their movement and liveliness.
Surrounding the goldfish are aquatic elements, such as gently swaying seaweed and rippling waves, which add depth and serenity to the composition. These decorative elements, enlivened by shimmering lacquer and fine powder, evoke the calm
beauty of a tranquil pond.
